It's almost necessary to really see the gorillas.**

I took two cameras to
record this experience
and very fast film
(1600 speed).

The view from where
we are watching the
gorillas. Beautiful!

Our group, observing the
gorillas. That's Tom in
the white shirt, the couple
furthest from me were
married, and the other
man was their tour guide
throughout Uganda (he
got Jeff's slot to see
the gorillas).

Our guide is to the
right, and an Ugandan
university student is to
the left. It's his job
to record precisely
everything the gorillas
did for the entire hour.

The trackers did an
incredible job clearing
the paths for us -- using
their machetes to hack
through impossible-looking
tangles of branches,
leaves, ferns, and wicked
stinging nettles. It's
important to wear long
pants and very sturdy
hiking boats.

"Hey dad, where are
you going?!" Uganda
seems to have great
pride and scholarly
interest in its gorillas.
Gone are the days of
indiscriminate poaching
and trapping.

We were told that if
we were ever charged to
crouch down and don't
make eye contact. It
rarely happens, though!

It's still hard for me
to absorb the magnitude
of this experience of
sitting among these
gentle creatures.
I'm very blessed.

At exactly one hour,
the mother came over,
picked the baby up,
swung him onto her
back, and walked into
the jungle so we were
unable to see them any
more. It's like she
knew our time was
up, and that was it --
like it or not!

Our group. We have all
sweated through our
clothes. But it was
truly worth the work!
The schools in the
background were built
with some of the money
we paid to track the gorillas.

This is David, my
lifesaver. He literally
pulled me up the
mountain! He was
such a blessing. I
tipped him so well
that I must of paid
for his family's
food for a week!!

This picture was sent
to us by Linda. We met
her at the Volcanoes
Camp, and she had just
hiked the gorillas. This
is her best baby gorilla
picture. Isn't it so cute?!
