QUEEN ELIZABETH PARK PIC LINK - 2nd SET
For two hours on the second day we were in Queen Elizabeth Park, we went on a walk with a ranger. We hiked along their
airstrip and down the length of the peninsula. It ended up being the same route that the Kazinga Channel cruise takes but we were
on land!
Our ranger's name was Poojah, and
we had the most interesting time with him -- learning about Africa's wildlife and lifestyles. In return,
he learned a lot about Americans!
Poojah is married with a daughter but he only sees his family once a week or so because he lives at the park.
He's been a ranger
for five years but his schooling is actually in accounting. He couldn't find work in his field after he
graduated, so he went to work at the park to be closer to home. He's done no traveling in his lifetime
except to the city of Kampala to see other parts of his family.
He asked us many questions about America,
one of them being our obsession with exercise. He asked what kind of workouts we did, and I told him
that I take kickboxing classes. He didn't quite understand what this was so right there, in the middle of
our hike, I gave him a demonstration. Jeff almost fell over from laughing so hard at me! But hey, Poojah
now knows what it is!
At the end of the peninsula was a bird hide (duck blind), and we watched birds in
their natural habitat. Poojah knew a lot about them! We also got to see a giant forest hog (they are so ugly) and very
hard to see, so we got lucky. Make sure to check out the first three pictures on the second set of
pictures of the Queen Elizabeth Park link above to see this hike.
