Daltons in AFRICA -- KENYA: Sheldrick's Pics.

An orphaned black
rhino -- the only one
at the orphanage. It is
2 years and 10 months
old. We only saw one
other rhino on our
whole trip to Africa.

Yum! You have to be very
careful around rhinos.
They have terrible
eyesight, so their
instinct is to charge
and stab you with their
horn if you get to
close. Watch out!

Baboons! You'll have to
click on this photo to
really see them. Baboons
are shy, so it's hard
to get photos of them! Ugh.

It was funny when these
elephants came. In the
distant you could hear
trumpeting and a small
stampede approaching.
They came in with their
ears flapping and very
proud. So adorable!

Lunch! An elephant is
milk dependent for the
first two years of its
life. That's why baby
elephants can't survive
if orphaned under the
age of two.

A baby elephant is never
left alone unattended.
Within its elephant family,
it never would be.
Therefore, the keepers
work in shifts to be
with the calves 24
hours a day, sleeping
in physical contact
with them during the
night on a bed of straw.

Shade is normally provided
for a baby elephant by its
mother, but in her absence
a blanket has to suffice.

Once a week the
elephants are rubbed
down with coconut oil
to keep their skin
soft and supple. I got
to actually pet these
elephants. It was
really neat!
