PICTURES OF ANGELA'S HOUSE
For the days we stayed in Nairobi, we were very fortunate to stay at my friend Angela’s house.
But as it so happens, her and her husband were here in the United States when we went to Kenya! Ugh!
They were so kind to let us stay at their place anyway. It saved us money on hotel rooms, we were able to cook for ourselves, and we could be very lazy sleeping off the ten hour time difference (and our illness at the end). Thanks Angela and Rob!
With Angela being here, she had the good fortune (ha!) to be able to answer all my six zillion questions. Anyone who knows me well, knows that I'm very thorough and tend to think everything out. So Jeff and I went well prepared! The only mishap was getting locked out of her house as her husband had left the key hidden in a certain place but the gardener spoiled our plans! But we were able to pull a “MacGyver” and get the keys despite the misfortune. Talk about stress after three days of traveling, though!
I didn't know what to expect of Angela’s “African” rental house. No worries -- it was so nice! It's quite a large house, situated on a medium size gated lot protected by a guard (all rental houses associated with the embassy come with guards). They have a gardener who tends to the grounds and a housekeeper who comes in twice a week.
Their housekeeper’s name is Florence, and she was really nice. They had her come in twice for us:
the first time was the day we arrived and she had prepared us dinner. We had missed her by about an
hour, though! The second time was to do our laundry between the Kenyan and Ugandan parts of our trip.
She did everything by hand and hung it outside on the clothes line to dry (no washer and
dryer – too expensive!). We're very grateful for all her work!
The laundry ended up not drying over night
as it wasn't warm enough (Florence had warned us), so we took wet clothes to
Uganda which was okay. We just let in dry in our hotel room with the air conditioning running
full blast! Hakuna matata (no problem)!
The house has four bedrooms, two baths, and a HUGE living room and kitchen. They don't have a tv, so we
enjoyed our time sleeping, reading, and listening to their wonderful cd collection. They don't have
a microwave or dishwasher, and it took awhile to figure out how to use the oven as you had to switch the
circuit breaker. They also don't have a computer hooked up to the Internet, as they do all their e-mailing at work. Check out the house by clicking on the link above!
