CARNIVORE RESTAURANT PICTURES
For lunch on the day we were touring Nairobi, we ate at the Carnivore Restaurant or
"Africa’s Greatest Eating Experience." This restaurant is ranked as the second best restaurant in Africa
and among the top fifty in the world according to a survey conducted by a panel of famous
restaurateurs, food writers, chefs, and gourmands.
As the name indicates, you'll be eating a lot of meat here!
The Carnivore is an all-you-can-eat, open-air meat specialty restaurant.
The meats are roasted over a huge charcoal barbecue pit on traditional Masai swords (skewers). The waiters then walk around the restaurant with these meat skewers and shave off unlimited amounts on to your sizzling, cast iron plate. The game meat comes largely from private farms, so you aren't eating the fully protected animals you came to Africa to see!
We ate the following nine animals: zebra, eland, chicken, beef, pork spare ribs, lamb, crocodile, hartebeest meatballs, and ostrich. My favorite was the crocodile, and Jeff loved the zebra. A variety of exotic sauces accompany the meat feast. Your meal also comes with soup, homemade fresh brown bread, a huge make-your-own salad (which we skipped – because everyone knows to not eat salads in Africa – ha, ha!), and dessert. (If you don't get this joke, click on "Staying Healthy” to the right.)
The meal is a flat price but drinks were extra. We had the famous Carnivore Dawa cocktail which was introduced to Kenya at the Carnivore. Dawa in Kiswahili means medicine or a health revival potion. The Carnivore "Dawa" is the drink chosen to hydrate, refresh, and sharpen your taste buds.
When you've had enough food, you take a little flag that is on the table out of its container and lay it down on the table. The servers then know you're full, and they won't come around with their skewers of meat any more. I tell you – you'll come out of this place stuffed and wishing you had another stomach! Quite fun!
