GAME DRIVE #5 PICTURE LINK
For this afternoon game drive, Jackson asked us if there was anything in particular we wanted to see or do.
I gave him the suggestion that I would
love to get right among a large elephant herd and watch them closely for about an hour. He obliged and off we went!
Jackson took us right to where a herd of about 50 elephants were grazing. As we slowly approached the herd from the side,
a young bull elephant started to chase us, trumpeting and flapping his ears. Jackson drove a little faster, but we were laughing
so hard at this sight that I'm surprised none of us didn't fall out of the jeep!
We got so incredibly close to these elephants. It was such an amazing experience to watch their trunks just rip huge chunks of grass out
of the ground and
either eat it or throw it on to their backs. I can easily see how they can be so destructive. Others were either playing in the mud or
touching one another with their trunks.
What's funny is that the elephants were watching us
as much as we were watching them. At one point Jackson got a little uncomfortable and repositioned the jeep so we wouldn't aggravate
them. The elephants would keep positioning themselves to protect their babies from us. Jeff and I feel so blessed to even have this
opportunity to do such an incredible thing!
The other idea that Jackson had in store for us was to take us to the spot where Out of Africa was filmed. On our way there, I took
a few pictures of some giraffes and waterbucks. We stopped to observe a very large herd of buffalo, who like to turn their butts
toward you in a defensive line. One buffalo is sent up to "test the wind" by smelling if you're friend or foe as they have terrible
eyesight. I guess we passed, as no one bothered us. You can really see how high the grass is here.
We ended up high in the hills of the Oloololo Escarpment. It offered a spectacular view of the Masai Mara, and it's neat to know that
this is where Out of Africa was filmed. The pictures from these
hills can actually be found on Game Drive #1 -- First Set of Pictures (first three pics). I put them there so you could "meet" all the people and see
what a Land Rover looks like.
Enjoy the picture link above of mostly elephants (amazing photos)!
