The Millennium Bridge was opened in 2000 to connect the newly opened Tate Modern with St. Paul's Cathedral
and the City. Nicknamed "a blade of light" for its sleek minimalist design, it's 370 yards long, four yards
wide, made of stainless steel with teak planks, and includes clever aerodynamic handrails to deflect wind over
the heads of pedestrians. This is London's first new bridge in a century, and it's visually impressive with
a slender horizontal thread and Y-shaped supports.

For three glorious days in 2000, Londoners made the pleasant seven-minute walk before the $25 million "bridge
to the next millennium" was closed for rethinking after swaying dangerously. Recently reopened, it cost $7
million to stabilize. It was built by an engineer, a sculptor, and an architect.
