YOUNG MAN LOSES FIVE-YEAR LEUKEMIA FIGHT
Larry A. Johnson, Jr.
Funeral services for Larry Adren Johnson Jr., 22, will be conducted
Wednesday at the Greater Friendship Baptist Church, 903 E. 13th Ave.,
at noon with Pastor J.L. Smith officiating. A visitation will be from
11 a.m. until service time a the church. An evening visitation will
be held from 4-8 p.m. tonight at the Witzleben Family Funeral Homes
& Crematory, Bragaw Chapel.
Mr. Johnson died Dec. 21 at Providence Hospital after a five-year
battle with leukemia. He was born on Oct. 1, 1966 in St. Louis and
came to Alaska in 1967.
He was a 1986 graduate of Bartlett High School and was on the Bartlett
basketball team when they won the 1986 championship. He was attending
Alaska Pacific University at the time of his death and had hoped to
play basketball for them.
Even though he was ill and in the hospital, he would always manage
to talk his doctor into giving him a pass so that he could attend
all the APU home games. While attending, he was the public address
announcer for APU and would give a special handshake with the starting
five players before tipoff.
He loved to play basketball, and would volunteer his time at sports
camps so that younger children could enjoy sports also.
His hobbies included music, drawing, swimming, many other sports,
and collecting stuffed animals.
He is survived by his parents, Marva Johnson and Larry A. Johnson,
Sr., both of Anchorage; a brother, Reginald Johnson of Anchorage,
a sister, Marva Lynn Johnson of Anchorage, and maternal grandfather,
Clarence Bolden Sr., of Memphis, Tenn.
Pallbearers will be Geno Morgan, James Rockmore, Anthony Harrington,
Alvin Bowser, Andy Rabung, John Paxton and David Ochoa. Honorary pallbearers
will be James Glover, Leonard McCloughlin, Sylvester Grant, Brian
Petro, Don Cunningham, Miles Giles and Steve Little.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions
be directed to the Larry A. Johnson Memorial Fund, 2921 E. 84th, Anchorage,
99507.
Burial will be at the Fort Richardson National Cemetery. Service arrangements
are by the Witzleben Family Funeral Homes & Crematory, Bragaw Chapel.
